More Clips of the 1224GT

Following some comments, I've recorded another audio clip of the 1224GT. There are a few differences to the last set of clips.

  • There is only one audio clip
  • The clips is based around the variations in tone available from the pedal board
  • I don't touch the amp throughout the whole 7 minutes.
  • In the clip, I talk you through which of the buttons have been pressed
  • The mp3 is at a bitrate of 192k

Some background to the recording:

  • Reverb is just on, about 8 o'clock on the dial
  • The switch at the back of the amp is on Triode
  • The front selector is on the first '2' out of '1224'
  • The guitar's tone and volume knobs stay at full

As well as a large variety of tone there's also a large variety of volume. When we get to the part where all the lights are on, I had to reduce the faders by 10dB. In future, I'm more likely to increase the main volume in order to reduce the volume difference between clean and full overdrive/solo volumes.

The Audio Clip

Why might this not sound like a good recording?

  • Mic placement - I'd have liked to have found a better-sounding place to put the mic. I settled on something that worked
  • There's no compression on the recording. Almost every commercial recording you hear will have the guitar channel compressed and most likely the whole song will be compressed. This is a much rawer file.
  • There's no artificial reverb. There was a slight amount on the amp, but none added after that.
  • Almost the opposite to the previous. Overdriven guitars don't necessarily need amp reverb when recording.
  • I used one signal chain to record everything so it was a compromise. For the cleaner sounds, I'd have used one mic combination in one place and used a different set-up for recording overdriven tones.
  • You're listening on laptop speakers (well, maybe). It's not mastered so no guarantees as to how it will sound on your system.
  • The guitar recording has not been processed. One of the first things I do with a guitar track in mixing is to find a space for the tone. Usually, I go straight for rolling-off the low end with a HPF if necessary. In this recording, I've left all the tone in, no eq at all.
  • I tried to record all the tones available from using the pedal board and pick-ups. The neck pickup with voice button on and overdrive on is going to sound muddy when playing chords.

Download

There's a wav download at 44.1kHz/16bit, but it's 70Mb. If you want a bit more clarity (but not that much really), feel free to download it.

Update

I've listened to the clip a bit more and I'm tempted to go against my original intention of not processing the audio at all. If you're interested in hearing a different version, let me know.
