My coding experiences

I've no real wish to publish this, since it shows part of me that isn't that active anymore. It does show my experiences and as we're all products of our experiences, I thought it worth publishing so you can gain some idea of where I'm coming from, especially if I'm talking about this site.

It probably helps to understand my background in relation to computers. I grew up with 8-bit computers and learnt BASIC and other teaching-based languages. I moved to C and throughout the early 90s I touched on Prolog and LISP as well. I was also introduced to Unix then and had the help of some great books such as The Unix Programming Environment. Along the way, I picked up AWK but left that domain just as Perl was being developed. From the mid-90s, I've coded in Oracle Forms, PL/SQL, Perl and Java. However despite all this I am not a coder or programmer. Back in the mid-90s, it was a large part of my job. Since then, I've been heavily involved in Business Analysis, Change Management, facilitation and the effects of implementing large-scale enterprise systems on people and processes. Nowadays, I don't code at all unless there's something that truly is quicker to do myself with my now limited coding skills and out-of-date knowledge. That'll happen only on a badly resourced project or where something else has gone wrong, e.g. a developer off ill and a short deadline. In fact, I don't trust my coding skills anymore, so I'll leave it to the professionals.

Bear that in mind if you look at anything that's done to this site; I only deal in configuration, e.g. changing the values in a config file or updating parameters. If it needs code, I'll usually give up.
